We can also laser "2D" barcodes into the hologram. This enables cost-effective, machine-readable numbering that can be read and interpreted using standard commercial scanners and software. The 2D barcode is a further development of the well-known barcode, however the integration of a multi-digit, alphanumeric code requires much less room.

For example, a 16-digit code requires an area of only 4x4 mm, whilst a barcode with the same sequence of figures would need an area more than twenty times the size. This would be impossible to include in a small hologram.
